How the Sequencer Works
The sequencer is a grid-based step sequencer — a tool that musicians and producers use to create repeating patterns of notes and percussion. Each row corresponds to a pitch or drum sound. Each column is a single step in time. When a cell is lit up (active), that sound will play when the playhead reaches it.
- Note rows — 10 pitches covering a C5-to-G3 pentatonic scale (the black-key-friendly scale used in countless melodies across blues, rock, and pop).
- Percussion rows — Kick, Snare, and Hi-hat for rhythm. The classic drum-machine trio.
- Instrument selector — Choose a timbre: Marimba (bright and woody), Piano (warm and familiar), Synth (smooth and electronic), or Strings (rich and sustained).
- BPM slider — Adjust the tempo from 60 to 200 BPM. Higher values make the loop run faster.
Notes & Pitch
A note is a single sound with a specific pitch. Pitch is how high or low a note sounds, determined by its frequency — the number of vibrations per second, measured in Hertz (Hz). Higher frequencies produce higher pitches.
The note rows in the sequencer use a pentatonic scale, a five-note scale that sounds pleasing in almost any combination. Specifically, it's the G major / E minor pentatonic (G-A-B-D-E), but spread across two octaves.

Rhythm & Beats
Rhythm is the pattern of sounds and silences in time. It's what makes you tap your foot. The sequencer divides time into 16 equal steps per bar (also called a loop in this context). Each step can be a quarter of a beat (a semiquaver / 16th note) when the loop is one bar of 4/4 time.

Rests & Silence
A rest is a measured silence. Just as notes have specific durations, rests mark specific amounts of time where no sound is played. In the sequencer, an inactive cell is effectively a rest — silence at that step.
Rests are just as important as notes. They create space, build tension, and make rhythms more interesting. A beat with no rests is a continuous wall of sound — but with strategic silences, you get groove, punch, and feel.
- Semibreve rest — 4 beats of silence (the whole bar)
- Minim rest — 2 beats of silence
- Crotchet rest — 1 beat of silence
- Quaver rest — ½ beat of silence
- Semiquaver rest — ¼ beat of silence (one step)
Melody, Harmony & Texture
These three concepts describe how notes relate to each other in different dimensions:
Melody
A melody is a sequence of single notes played one after another — the part you hum. In the sequencer, a melody is created by activating notes across different pitch rows in a specific order. Melodies have contour (they go up and down) and interval (the distance between notes).
Harmony
Harmony is when two or more notes sound at the same time, creating a chord. The sequencer plays multiple active cells in the same column simultaneously, producing harmony. The pentatonic scale is especially forgiving — almost any combination of its notes sounds consonant.
Texture
Texture describes how melody and harmony layers interact. The sequencer naturally produces different textures as you add or remove notes.

Percussion & Rhythm Instruments
Percussion instruments produce sound by being struck, shaken, or scraped. In the sequencer, the three drum sounds mirror the classic TR-808 drum machine layout:

- Kick — Often plays on the downbeat (step 0). Doubling the kick (steps 0 and 8) creates a standard rock beat. More kicks add energy; fewer kicks create a sparse, laid-back feel.
- Snare — The backbeat (steps 4 and 12) is the most common placement. Adding more snares creates urgency; removing them creates tension.
- Hi-hat — Playing on every step (16th notes) gives a driving, energetic feel. Playing on every other step (8th notes) sounds more relaxed. Accenting certain steps by making them louder changes the groove entirely.
