How the Sequencer Works

The sequencer is a grid-based step sequencer — a tool that musicians and producers use to create repeating patterns of notes and percussion. Each row corresponds to a pitch or drum sound. Each column is a single step in time. When a cell is lit up (active), that sound will play when the playhead reaches it.

Try this: Place notes on steps 0, 4, 8, and 12 of a low pitch (like G3), add a kick on steps 0 and 8, a snare on steps 4 and 12, and hi-hats on every other step. Press Play — you've made a basic beat!

Notes & Pitch

A note is a single sound with a specific pitch. Pitch is how high or low a note sounds, determined by its frequency — the number of vibrations per second, measured in Hertz (Hz). Higher frequencies produce higher pitches.

The note rows in the sequencer use a pentatonic scale, a five-note scale that sounds pleasing in almost any combination. Specifically, it's the G major / E minor pentatonic (G-A-B-D-E), but spread across two octaves.

Fun fact: The note A4 = 440 Hz is the international standard tuning pitch. Orchestras tune to this note before every concert — the oboe plays an A, and everyone else matches it.

Rhythm & Beats

Rhythm is the pattern of sounds and silences in time. It's what makes you tap your foot. The sequencer divides time into 16 equal steps per bar (also called a loop in this context). Each step can be a quarter of a beat (a semiquaver / 16th note) when the loop is one bar of 4/4 time.

Why 16 steps? 16 steps give enough resolution for interesting rhythms while staying simple enough to program by hand. Most classic drum machines (from the Roland TR-808 to modern DAWs) use 16-step sequencers.

Rests & Silence

A rest is a measured silence. Just as notes have specific durations, rests mark specific amounts of time where no sound is played. In the sequencer, an inactive cell is effectively a rest — silence at that step.

Rests are just as important as notes. They create space, build tension, and make rhythms more interesting. A beat with no rests is a continuous wall of sound — but with strategic silences, you get groove, punch, and feel.

Try this: Remove every other hi-hat from your pattern. Notice how the "empty" steps create a push-and-pull feel. That's the power of silence in rhythm.

Melody, Harmony & Texture

These three concepts describe how notes relate to each other in different dimensions:

Melody

A melody is a sequence of single notes played one after another — the part you hum. In the sequencer, a melody is created by activating notes across different pitch rows in a specific order. Melodies have contour (they go up and down) and interval (the distance between notes).

Harmony

Harmony is when two or more notes sound at the same time, creating a chord. The sequencer plays multiple active cells in the same column simultaneously, producing harmony. The pentatonic scale is especially forgiving — almost any combination of its notes sounds consonant.

Texture

Texture describes how melody and harmony layers interact. The sequencer naturally produces different textures as you add or remove notes.
